12 questions with Stacey Dooley

As one of the UK’s most cherished documentary presenters, Stacey has spent her career giving voice to untold stories. Now, with the release of her new book Dear Minnie – a deeply personal exploration of motherhood through letters – she’s shining a spotlight on one of life’s most intimate and powerful forms of communication.

To mark her book launch (released 13th March), Stacey’s teamed up with Papier to create a six week only stationery collection, inspiring us all to rediscover the beauty of letter writing.

Dear Minnie is a compilation of letters from mothers to their children – including yourself. How did it come about?
I loved the idea of the old school romance of writing a letter that’s kept for decades, and I think that's why I was so keen to write this book.

I hate the J word, but I wanted to document mine and Minne’s journey and how I found motherhood. I really was so delighted that other mothers agreed to contribute [letters] to the book because it means that all of their kids can read what their mothers were going through also. It feels really special.

STACEY DOOLEY BOOK QUOTE

What do you love about telling real-life stories?
Real-life stories are always SO MUCH more exciting than fiction.

What do you think is the secret to letter writing?
I think sometimes there’s a temptation to put too much pressure on it. Like, it has to be this, like, perfect poetic read. I actually think it's just important to sit down and write: this is how we're feeling right now, this is what life looks like.

Your perfect soundtrack for a letter writing session.
I love disco. That's not particularly thoughtful or considered, but, yeah, I like a disco playlist!

The last letter that made you cry?
A few of our mum's letters [in the book] are tear jerkers, honestly!

Describe your writing process in 3 words.
Interrupted, candid, procrastination.

Who’s someone you wish you could write to, past or present?
I like writing love letters to my boyfriend. He tours a lot, so I'll write a little note and throw it in his case.

Advice for those with a story to tell who feel they’re not ‘qualified’ or ready to write it?

Anyone who has a genuine passion is perfectly placed.

What’s the most memorable letter you've ever received?
Well, this is a funny one. I received a letter saying I was going to be made an MBE, but it was from HMRC or HMC or something very formal and corporate. I thought ‘Oh God, I'm in trouble, I haven't done the tax bill properly!” but actually it was welcomed news.

How do you push through writer’s block?
Have a cuppa and come back later. And perspective. I’m not saving lives.

One habit you find helpful for staying motivated through creative projects.
Remember how bloody lucky we are to get to do this.

The one stationery item you couldn’t live without.
A chic, skinny pen. And my fancy Filofax.
